Action 🎬

The New Year euphoria is gradually fizzling out. However, you can still set things straight in case you didn't get to do so early enough. Before you go on to read this, kindly read Ruth Nzere’s piece on the New Year if you haven't done so. Thanks

According to the Gregorian calendar, it’s the beginning of a New Year. As it's customary of almost all individuals, the year usually begins with setting goals and mapping out how we want to run the new 3by65 metres race set before us.
One of the deepest concern of everyone is how to run the new race in a different way and not give up on laid out routes and plan.

For every game, there is a game plan. Also, for every new year, there is a game plan called New Year goals, resolutions and the likes. Some of these goals are long standing things we want to change or get rid of. Some of us almost gave up on some item(s) and almost did not add it/them to our New Year game plan, but on second thought we decided to add it/them, thinking perhaps this could be the year for a complete turnaround on that issue. The question that still begs for an answer is how do I achieve my goals for the year?

This write-up isn't meant to prescribe ways to achieve your goals for the new year, I could make use of some help in that department as well. This however, is to inform you that you can achieve your goals this year without sweat. Join me as we learn and open up our minds together.

As the New Year drew near and the old year faded away to the background, I became restless. I started to think of the new year and had a strong desire to get things right in all areas this year. I want this year to be meaningful and impactful. On my soul searching journey, I couldn’t say I found anything until the cross over on the 31st. During the last few hours of the year, I realised through the help of the Holy Spirit that I could only achieve so much this year if I stopped doing the same thing the usual way.

We need to be unusual once in a while. The greatest man that ever walked the face of the earth said something very profound while he was still an inhabitant of the earth. According to him, you can't use a new piece of garment to patch an old garment, as this combination would only make the new garment to be ruined, and the old one to look worse. He also used another illustration just in case the garment example doesn’t drive the point home; he says you cannot put new wines into old wine skins and expect the wine to stay. The difference would cause the wine skin to burst.  My point is this, try not to start the new year the same way you started last year's new year. For example, you could start the year with fewer goals and more action plans.

Action plans are things that can help you achieve your goals. Instead of having 10 goals listed as what you want to achieve in the first quarter, why not set let’s say three goals, then have about six action plans. Make your action plan doable. Don't try to change yourself overnight, work at your pace. Don’t try to be personality driven (that is thinking of what people would think of you and make out of you), rather, be growth driven. Edge it in your mind that you want to grow and take your action plans the way you want it. We have different personal styles, make your goals your personal style and be particular about it. Some people might want to start asking 'where's the place of discipline?' don’t worry; just know that it’s a step by step process.

Take your first quarter action plan like a child who is learning to walk. You would certainly fall and misbehave along the line, but you don’t have to beat yourself up about it. After all what has your self condemnation done for you in the past years? When you feel you’ve done well, pat yourself on the back and keep going.
Your action plans aren't to impress anyone but your self.

This write-up is not to encourage laziness and lack of dreams and the other stuff. Let's all be truthful to ourselves, how many of our goals have we truly achieved through regimes? We are natural civilians, so we always tend to fail at following regimes that aren't built in us. Ask those with serious dieting issues, and they would tell you what they’ve had to pass through. This write up is to preach faithfulness and commitment. Why do you brush your teeth every morning? See your action plans as a personal hygiene routine, and if you aren't the hygiene type, view your action plans as food. Why do you eat? Be friends with your action plans, love your action plans, and don’t set out a plan that you'd get worried over achieving before you start acting. Set plans you believe and know that you can achieve with your present capacity.

Don’t try to change your saving habit by planning to save #50,000 per month, when your monthly income is #60,000 and your rent per month is #40,000. If your goal is to save at least #50,000 per month, set goals such as getting an extra job, selling   your skills to make more money and so on. If by the end of the first month you haven't gotten an extra job or your other source of income isn't yielding enough to allow you save up to #50,000, reduce your benchmark. Find a price range you can afford after cutting down on all excesses and save that. You can go for #20,000. The fulfilment you'd get from this is the fact that you are consistently saving up. If your income increases along the line, then jack up your savings benchmark. Keep it at the back of your mind that the initial benchmark is #50,000.

Keep looking out for ways to achieve that goal based on the action plans of getting an additional source of income you already set for yourself. If at the end of the year you still couldn't get to the level of #50,000 per month, pat yourself on the back because you were after all able to manage your limited resource and still save up consistently throughout the year.

Ensure your goals are workable and achievable. Action plans, I repeat, action plans is the way to go this year.
