The things we miss out on, simply because we don’t know who we are.
There’s this story (paraphrased by me) about the man who saved so much to buy tickets to get on a ship. He could only afford the tickets, or so he thought. During mealtimes, while others headed to the dining room to enjoy sumptuous and lavish meals, he would stay back in his room to eat cabin biscuits and the likes that he had managed to bring on board.
The last night on the ship, a fellow passenger who had observed his withdrawal into his cabin at meal times finally decided to question him to find out why he chose to miss out on the mouth-watering culinary delicacies other passengers were enjoying.
His response: “After paying for the ticket, I did not have money to pay for the meals”
The other fellow was surprised and had to explain that the ticket was his pass on the ship so he had a right to the meals and much more.
The man was shocked to hear this. He was also sad. If only he knew the status conferred on him by virtue of his ticket. If only.
He got to eat dinner with the rest of the ship that night and his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw the variety of luxurious meals and drinks had missed out on. I like to think he must have gorged a bit in an attempt to have a taste everything, at least for the sake of tales……
This story is similar in a sort to a story I read about a set of people (Ezra 2: 59-63) who returned to Jerusalem from captivity. While everyone could trace their genealogies, these people could not. They could not prove that they were Israelites. As a result, they could not continue in their priestly offices or even enjoy the benefits accrued to their lineage until their genealogy was proved.
I don’t know how they lost their genealogies but I know there’s no difference between someone who has a ticket but misses out on the benefits of the ticket and someone who is supposed to have a ticket but does not have one or proof of it, as the case may be.
Stories aside, if you don’t know who you are or cannot prove who you are, you are sure to miss out on a whole lot of stuffs, great stuffs.
Forever is too long to be miserable. Be guided!
